Bellwood set for big day

May 14, 2013
The Altoona Mirror

Bellwood-Antis is set for another big showing in today's District 6 Class AA Track and Field Meet at Mansion Park.

The meet is scheduled to start off at 3:30 p.m. with the girls 3200-meter relay. The top three finishers in each event advance to the PIAA championship meet next week, as will any competitors meeting a predetermined state qualifying standard.

The Blue Devils garnered six No. 1 seeds in the boys running events. Kyle Bartlett is ranked first in both the mile and the two-mile runs, as well as being part of the second-seeded 3200 relay. Ian O'Shea and Seth Worthing each are seeded first in one individual event - the 300 hurdles and 100 dash, respectively - and run together on the first-seeded 400 and 1600 relay teams.

Worthing also is seeded second in the 200, while O'Shea is seeded third in the 100.

Five other area boys are seeded first: Northern Cambria's Derek Bearer in the 400 dash, Huntingdon's Kobren Frederick in the triple jump, Cambria Heights' Shawn Lacue in the high jump, Tyrone's Charles Wilson-Adams in the long jump and Northern Cambria's Gus Yahner in the pole vault.

Wilson-Adams also is seeded second and is the reigning PIAA Class AA champion in the high jump. The district seedings are based on the top performance in each event during the season.

Penn Cambria's James Mardula is seeded in the top three in all three jumps, while Williamsburg's Bryce England is ranked second to Bartlett in both long-distance races.

Central Cambria's Alyssa Brandis and Tyrone's Jordan Swogger are the highest seeded area girls at the meet. Swogger is in position to win four gold medals - she's the top seed in the 200 and 400 and runs on the top-rated 1600 relay and No. 2-seeded 400 relay.

Brandis owns the best district times this season in the 1600 and 3200 and is part of a 3200 relay that could break the 6-AA meet record.

Bishop Carroll's Carrie D'Andrea is seeded first in the 300 hurdles, as are Huntingdon's Hannah Cunningham in the pole vault and Tyrone's Erika Voyzey in the high jump - Voyzey is part of a three-way tie for the No. 1 spot.
