Robert J. Wakefield, 86, Martinsburg, went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Robert A. and Sarah Wakefield, formerly of Bedford. He married Mary Lois Shriver on Sept. 12, 1965, at Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg, and she passed away Jan. 29, 2012.
Surviving are a brother, Gerald "Perk" and wife, Janet, of Bedford County; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by two sisters: Martha Smith and Donna Colvin.
Robert was a U.S. Army veteran assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, attaining the rank of private second class. Prior to marriage, he was employed as a farmhand for his dad on the family farm. He held many various jobs during his working career, including a milk truck driver for Eugene Koontz, a tool and die maker at Hedstrom Plant, Bedford, and a tool and die maker and welder at Electric Motor & Supply Co., where he poured bearings.
Robert was a member of Holsinger Church of the Brethren, rural New Enterprise, and more recently attended the Morrisons Cove Baptist Church, rural Roaring Spring, and Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church. He enjoyed helping people and woodworking, making kitchen cabinets and many other things. He was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed gardening.
Friends will be received from 1:30 until the 3 p.m. funeral service Monday, May 13, 2013, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg, the Rev. Dottie Steele, Village-in-Place Hospice chaplain, officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be given to the National Alzheimer's Foundation or Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.
