William P. Smith, 84, Tyrone, died Tuesday at Epworth Manor.
He was born in Tyrone, son of the late T. Harry and Loretta (Blyler) Smith. He married Betsy Garman on June 24, 1950, at Hollidaysburg Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ralph Wolfgang officiating.
Surviving are his wife; two children: D. Brooks Smith and wife, Karen, of Altoona and Virginia Ann Smith and husband, William Keeney, of Philadelphia; two grandsons: Matthew Rippon of Pittsburgh and Jonathan (Ginger) Woodring of Yardley; and two great-grandchildren: Andrean and Sylvia Woodring.
He was preceded in death by 10 siblings: Alfaretta, Claude, Donald, Charlotte, Tom, Janet, Lelia, twins Naomi and Ruth and David. William was the last of his immediate family.
Mr. Smith was a 1947 graduate of Tyrone High School. He was a former member of the Pennsylvania National Guard. He had been employed by Westvaco at the chlorine dioxide plant for 22 years and later as an outside salesman for Standard Supply and Equipment of Altoona, from which he retired in 1991.
Mr. Smith was a life member of BPOE No. 212 and a member of Sinking Valley Country Club, where he was fortunate enough to have made a hole-in-one twice. He was also a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
William enjoyed reading, poetry and music and, at one time, had been a member of the Westvaco Choir and the Great Books Club. He was an accomplished Tyrone High School wrestler and an avid Penn State football fan.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Trinity Episcopal Church with Deacon Jack Hoffer officiating.
