Covering the bases

LEADING OFF: The Curve managed only three hits Monday but made the most of them in scoring two runs to beat Akron. They manufactured a run in the first as 3B Andy Vasquez singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt by CF Mel Rojas and third on a throwing error before scoring on an infield single by 1B Matt Curry. RF Alex Dickerson collected the only other hit of the night with a homer in the seventh.

SAFE AT FIRST: RHP Jeff Inman got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to protect the 2-0 lead and finished it off in the ninth for his second save.

STEALING SECOND: Akron RHP Brett Brach (1-2) took the tough-luck loss despite allowing just one run on two hits with five strikeouts and no walks in six innings.

ROUNDING THIRD: There's a great video making the rounds online of former Curve RHP Bryan Bullington pitching in Japan. Bullington had just started his windup when the batter tried to call timeout, so Bullington, clearly angered by it, continued his delivery and fired a fastball high and tight that nearly hit the batter. Google "Bryan Bullington Deadspin" and it will take you to a link with the video.

HEADING HOME: The Curve paid tribute to the cult classic comedy "Office Space" Monday night, with numerous references to the 1999 movie. Video clips of the film were shown throughout the game, along with on-field games that included references to TPS reports, a "jump to conclusions mat" and the famous Swingline red stapler.
