Lions sidelined in semis

HARMONY - The Altoona boys volleyball team lost to Seneca Valley, 25-16, 25-17, in the semifinals of the Seneca Valley Tournament after topping Seton-LaSalle, 25-8, 25-18 in the play-in round and Archbishop Hoban, 25-15, 30-32, 16-14, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Ethan Knepp had a team-high 33 service points, Tanner Baumgartner recorded 41 kills and 43 digs, and Josh Huber registered 21 blocks.

The Mountain Lions defeated West Shamokin, 25-12, 25-18, in pool play. Altoona lost to McDowell, 25-16, 26-24, and split with South Park, 23-25, 27-25.

The junior varsity team also lost in the semifinals, to Saegertown, 25-22, 25-15. Altoona topped Obama Academy, 25-7, in the quarterfinals.

In JV pool play, the Lions topped Obama (25-13, 25-15) and Saegertown (25-19, 25-22), split with Canon-McMillan, 23-25, 25-16 and lost to Seneca Valley (25-19, 25-14) and McDowell (25-18, 26-24).

Josh Over had 48 service points for Altoona.

BG swept by USC

Upper St. Clair recorded a three-set sweep, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23, of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium in high school boys volleyball.

USC improved to 6-3 while BG dropped to 8-2.

Jamey Brumbaugh, Damon Rickens and Nick Little each recorded eight kills, and Ben Kasun added 26 assists. Collin Welteroth led BG with seven service points.

Tigers blanked

MILL HALL - Von Walker silenced Hollidaysburg on two hits, while Dylan Kerstetter went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to power Central Mountain over the Golden Tigers in baseball action.

Trent Sipes and Thane Russell singled to deny Walker a no-hitter. Drew Nymann also was 2-for-3 for Central Mountain.

Portage falls in finals

PORTAGE - Cody Luse went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs on his way to notching MVP honors as Penns Valley won the Portage Spring Classic baseball tournament by defeating the host Mustangs in the finals, 9-2.

Cameron Tobias came up with three hits and three RBIs for Penns Valley to back L.J. Johnson's six-hit pitching. Michael Bryja led Portage with two hits.

Luke Dividock pitched a four-hitter, Brandon Madigan went 3-for-3 and Bryja had two more hits and three RBIs as Portage beat Harmony, 13-2, in five innings in the first game. Shane Baker and Evan Price each added two hits for the Mustangs, with Baker driving in three runs. Harmony's Evan Novella had two hits.

Penns Valley reached the championship game by beating Southern Huntingdon, 14-4 in six innings. Southern Huntingdon rolled to a 15-0 win in the consolation game.

There also were several skill competitions. Southern Huntingdon's Quintin Whitsel won the 60-yard dash, Penns Valley's Adam DeGennaro prevailed in the throw from the outfield, and Penns Valley's Max Bair came out on top in the home run derby.

Altoona Teener Major

Andrew Gressler scattered five hits while coming up with three of his own as Postal Express downed AFC, 7-1, in a battle of unbeaten Altoona Teener Major baseball teams Saturday afternoon at Seitz Field.

Jake Hord contributed two hits and three RBIs for Postal, which also got two hits from Josiah Huber and two RBIs from Nathan LaMark.

n Turner Bush doubled and drove in four runs as Furrer Beverage scored five times in the seventh inning for a 6-3 win over C&G Savings Bank.

Tom Bettwy worked three-plus innings of relief for the win. Caleb Lansberry had a triple and an RBI. Nate Snyder, Nate Della and Hunter Stoy each had solo RBI efforts for C&G.

n Austin Zupon, Derek Burket and Mike Weston combined on a six-hitter as Teeter Group turned back Tom Dickey Law Office, 7-4.

J.M. Knepp had two hits and two RBIs for Teeter. Trevor Hyle doubled and knocked in a run for Dickey Law.
