PSU draft hopefuls

April 25, 2013
The Altoona Mirror

This isn't expected to be a strong NFL draft for Penn State, with few Nittany Lions projected to be selected and none likely going in the first two rounds. The first PSU player to hear his name called figures to be LB Gerald Hodges or DT Jordan Hill. Here are the Lions' draft hopefuls:

LB Gerald Hodges (6-1, 243)

Projected round: 3-4

Breakdown: Rated fourth-best OLB in draft by NFL.com; technically sound linebacker with good nose for ball and solid tackler; can cover TEs and RBs in pass coverage; doesn't have great size to shed bigger blockers

DT Jordan Hill (6-1, 303)

Projected round: 3-4

Breakdown: Rated 18th-best DT in draft by NFL.com; smart player with good instincts and solid against run and pass; not overly quick or physically dominant like former PSU DT standouts Jared Odrick and Devon Still

LB Michael Mauti (6-2, 243)

Projected round: 5-6

Breakdown: Rated fifth-best ILB in draft by NFL.com; a second- or third-round talent who could slip a long way because of medical history (three knee injuries); epitomizes leadership, character and determination, which surely helps his stock

C Matt Stankiewitch (6-3, 302)

Projected round: 7

Breakdown: Rated 12th-best C in draft by NFL.com; underrated player in college who performed well in run and pass blocking; one scouting report said he's pushed to ground too easily; could have benefited from another year in PSU's new strength program

Other late-round possibilities: CB Stephon Morris, DE Sean Stanley, QB Matt McGloin
