Covering the bases

April 23, 2013
The Altoona Mirror

LEADING OFF: Pirates RHP Charlie Morton will make a rehab start for the Curve tonight in Richmond. Morton is coming off Tommy John surgery and trying to get back to the big leagues this season. He is expected to throw 60 pitches tonight.

SAFE AT FIRST: Morton is making his second rehab start of the season. He gave up two runs on three hits in three innings Thursday for Single-A Bradenton.

STEALING SECOND: Richmond used to be the Braves' Triple-A farm team, and Morton came up through Atlanta's system before getting traded to the Pirates in 2009. But he never pitched in Richmond as the Triple-A affiliate had already moved to Gwinnett by the time he got to the level in 2008.

ROUNDING THIRD: LF Andrew Lambo went 1-for-5 Monday and has reached base in all 19 of the Curve's games.

HEADING HOME: The Curve have two everyday players and one key regular hitting below .160: SS Gift Ngoepe (.140), C Carlos Paulino (.159) and U Stefan Welch (.150).
