Marauders take Warwick volleyball tourney

LITITZ - The Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School boys volleyball team captured the championship of the Warwick Tournament on Saturday.

BG defeated the host team, 25-18, in the finals after having lost to Warwick in pool play. The Marauders topped Northern York in the quarterfinals, 25-16, and Red Lion in the semifinals, 25-20.

BG went 7-3 in pool play, sweeping New Oxford (25-18, 25-8), Elizabethtown (25-23, 25-23) and Brandywine Heights (25-19, 25-22), splitting with Berks County Catholic (25-22, 26-27) and falling to Warwick (25-21, 25-19).

Statistical leaders for BG included Jamey Brumbaugh (28 kills, 37 digs), Damon Rickens (29 kills, 20 digs), Ben Kasun (25 kills, 17 digs, 105 assists), Nick Little (32 kills, 11 digs, 10 blocks), Brennan Hurd (29 points, 16 digs) and Collin Welteroth (29 points, 11 digs).

Altoona falls in first round

GREENSBURG - Altoona lost to Meadville, 25-12, in the first round of the playoffs at the Spartan Boys Volleyball Invitational at Hempfield.

The Mountain Lions fell to Cochranton, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21, beat Allderdice, 25-19, 25-20, 25-16, and dropped one to Latrobe, 25-21, 25-23, 24-25, in pool play.

Kody Clawson had 38 digs, Tanner Baumgartner had 25 kills, 27 assists and 16 service points, and James Piaggio had 13 blocks for Altoona.

In the junior varsity tournament, Altoona fell to Latrobe, 25-13, in the semifinals. Altoona topped Butler in the quarterfinals, 25-23. Norwin beat the Lions, 25-17, 25-13, split with Meadville, 19-25, 25-24, topped Baldwin, 25-21, 25-18, and topped Deer Lake, 25-13, 25-13.

Josh Over had 23 service points and 16 digs for the Altoona JVs.

Lee, Wagner, Port prevail

SHIPPENSBURG - Altoona senior DeShae Lee claimed first place in the high jump, junior Abby Wagner won the triple jump, and senior Carly Port won the 2,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday at the Shippensburg High School Track and Field Invitational.

The Altona boys and girls each placed fourth in the 43-team field. Cumberland Valley won the boys' meet, and State College won on the girls' side.

Lee jumped 6 feet, 4 inches to win the high jump. Other top finishers for the Mountain Lions included Colby Koeck (third in pole vault, 14-0), Terry Futrell (fourth in 2,000 steeplechase, 6:51.43), Brennan Luciano (fourth in long jump, 20-11; fifth in triple jump, 43-7) and Dominic Stroh (fifth in 2,000 steeplechase, 6:54.26).

In addition, the Altoona boys 3200 relay team of Stroh, Futrell, Mitch Endress and Brad Foust placed fourth in 8:23.57, and the 1600 relay team of Tyler Romanowicz, Foust, Joe Reffner and Jon Stoltz was seventh in 3:34.16.

Wagner not only won the triple jump with a leap of 37-2, but she also placed second in the long jump with a 17-1. Port's winning time in the steeplechase was 8:03.30.

Other standouts for the Lady Lions were Katelyn Goodman (second in discus, 114-4) and Hannah Mulhern (fourth in pole vault, 10-6).

Tigers take second

JOHNSTOWN - Andy Crum went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in two more for Hollidaysburg in the first round of its Gene Schultz baseball tournament game at Point Stadium, a 10-0 win over Westmont Hilltop.

Adam Fluke tripled among his three hits, scored a run and drove in a pair of runs in the championship game, but Bishop McCort handed the Golden Tigers their first loss of the season, 8-5.

STATE COLLEGE - Ryan Karstetter went 3-for-4 and drove in a run as State College topped Altoona in high school baseball.

Ben Finlan tossed a complete-game shutout for the Little Lions and struck out seven while allowing just two hits.

Bellwood juniors go 4-1

BELLWOOD - Bellwood-Antis went 4-1 at its own junior high invitational softball tournament, beating Tyrone (24-7), West Branch (7-2) and Hollidaysburg twice (4-3 and 5-3) while also losing to the Lady Tigers (7-5) along the way.

The format was a round-robin, two-game elimination.

Bellwood's Maddie Miller had two doubles, two RBIs and got the win in the 4-3 victory over Hollidaysburg. B-A's Natalie Bolden also had two hits.

In the 5-3 win over Hollidaysburg, Saige McElwain got the win. B-A's Caroline Showalter had two hits, while Miller added three hits along with two RBIs.

Hollidaysburg went 2-2 at the event, beating West Branch, 9-4, and going 1-2 against Bellwood.

In the win over West Branch, winning pitcher Mikayla Focht struck out four and did not walk a batter. She also hit a home run. Morgan Seiler and Hailey Shaffer led Hollidaysburg with two hits each.

In the 7-5 win over Bellwood, Kaitlyn Cappella got the win. She struck out four and did not walk a batter. Seiler had two hits.

Focht homered in the 4-3 loss to Bellwood, and Seiler had two hits and two RBIs in the 5-3 loss to the Lady Blue Devils.
