Barton Sherman Smith, 89, Altoona, died early Saturday morning Dec. 15, 2012, at Valley View Home.
He was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Hollidaysburg, son of the late John William and Catherine (Wise) Smith. He married Dorothy Mae Smith on Sept. 21, 1945, at Garden Heights Evangelical United Brethren Church. She preceded him in death on June 22, 2011.
Surviving are three children: Gary Lee and wife, Phyllis, of Glendale, Ariz., Nancy L. of Greenwood and Jeffrey B. Smith of Nanty Glo; two granddaughters: Emily and Sarah in Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews; and seven siblings: Elizabeth, Margaret, Lois, Myrtle, Rebecca, Anna and Mary.
Barton was a graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, attaining the rank of Gunner's Mate 3rd Class. He retired as a supervisor from the A&P warehouse in 1982 after 37 years of service. He had also been employed as a security officer, primarily at Tyrone Hospital.
Barton was a member of East End United Methodist Church, Altoona, where he served on the board of trustees and as head usher for many years. He enjoyed helping people and the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and gardening. He was also a gentleman farmer.
Friends will be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, Pastor Tyler Pepper officiating. Interment was made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Altoona.
