Melvin A. Calhoun Sr., 71, Roaring Spring, died Saturday afternoon at Altoona Regional following an extended illness.
He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late Edward and Mary (Cottle) Calhoun. He married Anne L. Keirn on May 14, 1966, in Altoona. She died on Jan. 14, 2011.
Melvin is survived by a son and a daughter: Ronald L. Calhoun and wife, Wendi, of Roaring Spring and Renee E. Kiesel and husband, Todd, of Duncansville; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Ken Calhoun and wife, Melissa, of Roaring Spring.
He was preceded in death by a son, Melvin A. Calhoun II, and an infant sister.
He retired from Suburban Propane, McKee, and had previously served as a police officer in Williamsburg and Roaring Spring.
He had served in the United States Army.
Melvin enjoyed collecting John Deere tractors, spending time with his grandkids and was a member of the "BCO University," Martinsburg. He was a life member of the Friendship Volunteer Fire Dept. No. 1 Inc., Roaring Spring, and a member of the Portage Lodge No. 220 F&AM, the Jaffa Temple, the Jaffa Motor Corps, and the Murray-Appleman American Legion Post No. 147, Roaring Spring.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring, where a Masonic service will be performed at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home by the Rev. Dr. Joel Kletzing. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Roaring Spring.
