John B. "Bub" Maurer, 97, Martinsburg, formerly of Henrietta, died Friday morning at The Village at Morrisons Cove after an extended illness.
He was born in Curryville, son of the late Jacob B. and Catherine (Summers) Maurer. He was twice married, first to Daisy M. Weyant, whose death on Nov. 1, 1991, ended a 56-year marriage. He then married Irene Gahagan on July 28, 1996.
Surviving are his wife; a son, B. Carl and wife, Becky, of East Freedom; a stepson, Steven A. Blough and wife, Mary Ann, of Aberdeen, Md.; four grandchildren: Bob Strong and wife, Teia, Beth Culp, B. Lee Maurer and wife, Stephanie, and Tracy Dibert; eight great-grandchildren: Amber, Erin, Wesley, Danielle, Nathan, Alyssa, Carly and Adam; and two great-great-grandchildren: Roslynn and Eva.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Brumbaugh, on April 22, 1966; a granddaughter, Rhonda Brumbaugh, in 1965; two sisters: Ruth Koontz and Jean McCabe; and two brothers: Wilbert and Lynn.
John attended Morrison Cove High School and retired from Penn Central Railroad in 1976. He was a member of the Diehl's Crossroads Church of the Brethren, where he had served as a lifetime deacon, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendant and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of the Roaring Spring Lions Club, National Camping and Hiking Association and Shanty Shakers Camping Group and had served as a deputy sheriff and constable.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and carpentry, camping, reading his Bible, traveling and playing musical instruments.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, at Diehl's Crossroads Church of the Brethren by Pastor Robert Detwiler. Interment will be made in Diehl's Crossroads Cemetery.
