Covering the bases

April 9, 2013
The Altoona Mirror

LEADING OFF: LF Quincy Latimore went 2-for-4 for Akron on Monday against his former team to raise his average to .313. Latimore, the Curve's home run leader the past two years, was traded by the Pirates to the Indians for RHP Jeanmar Gomez.

SAFE AT FIRST: The winning pitcher Monday, Akron's Toru Murata, is a 27-year-old Japanese pitcher who once was a prized prospect in his country. He was a first-round pick of the Yomiuri Giants in 2007 but went just 2-10 with a 4.56 ERA in three minor league seasons in Japan.

STEALING SECOND: The Curve turn over their starting rotation tonight as RHP Brandon Cumpton will make his second start. He allowed four runs in five innings in the season opener at Erie.

ROUNDING THIRD: OF Alex Presley is off to a hot start at Triple-A Indianapolis, hitting .412 (7-for-17). C Tony Sanchez is hitting .125 (1-for-8) through three games.

HEADING HOME: IF Brandon Inge, who's on the major league disabled list, is off to a slow start at Indy, hitting .143 (2-for-14).
