Edgar L. Johnston, 86, Martinsburg, formerly of Bernard Lane, Altoona, died Sunday evening at Homewood at Martinsburg after an extended illness.
He was born in Dean, son of the late Harry and Henrietta (Plunket) Johnston. He married Amelia F. Eder on May 20, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife; six children: Steven E. and wife, Janice, of Cranberry Township, Kenneth J. and wife, Deborah, of Altoona, Mary M. Carey and husband, Robert, of Altoona, Gerald H. and wife, Shelly, of Mechanicsburg, Karen L. Macak and husband, Rick, of Hollidaysburg and David J. and wife, Lori, of Fairview; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Linus F. of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Marie; a son, Edgar Alan; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Edgar was a 1945 graduate of Cresson High School and a 1950 graduate of St. Francis College, Loretto. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in WWII in Japan and the Philippines. He retired in 1989 as general manager of the Accounting Center at Conrail with 39 years of service.
Edgar was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, where he was a lector/commentator, and also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Speakers Club of Altoona and Bavarian Aid Society. He was a past president of St. Mary's PTA and a past president of the Cathedral school board.
He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, photography and public speaking.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. today, April 3, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
