Peggy Kowalczyk, 93, formerly of Spring Manor Apartments, Hollidaysburg, died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at the Altoona Center for Nursing Care following a brief illness.
She was born in 1919 in Altoona, daughter of the late Lawrence and Bess (Pixley) McCabe. She was twice married, first to John L. Roland Jr. and then to Joe Kowalczyk, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons: John L. Roland III (Ann) and Randy Roland (Beth), all of Altoona; a stepdaughter, Patty Conrad (Allen) of Maryland, whom she raised; eight grandchildren and a stepgranddaughter; 14 great-grandchildren and a step-great granddaughter; a brother, John McCabe in New Jersey; a sister, Pat Hartley of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and a special friend, Liz Metsger.

She was a 1938 graduate of Bedford High School and also attended Altoona High School.
She worked at various jobs including Butterick Co. and J.C. Penney, various nursing homes and as a housekeeper and office aide for Father Wideman of St. Joseph's Parish in Coupon.
She was a volunteer at Bon Secours and Altoona hospitals for 10 years.
Peggy was very creative. She enjoyed drawing, painting, crocheting and making flower arrangements. She belonged to several card clubs. She also enjoyed reading, dancing with senior citizens and traveling, especially to see lighthouses, and she loved to shop. She mostly enjoyed being with her family.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona.
