Leonard E. "Gene" Wertz, 82, Tyrone, died Tuesday at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center.
He was born in Tyrone, son of Perry A. and Maude G. (Reese) Wertz. He married Darlene I. Miller in May 1953, and she died Sept. 7, 2011.
Surviving are three daughters: Debra Thompson of Pittsburgh, Karen Stewart of Tyrone and Vicky Wertz of Altoona; a son, Kenneth (Amy) of Tyrone; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Chaney S. and Donald L.
Gene served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951-53. In 1957, the family moved to New York, where he worked for International Paper from 1957-75. In 1975, they moved back to Bald Eagle, and he worked at the power plant at Penn State University until his retirement in 1992.
Gene was a member of VFW Post 4559, American Legion Post 281 and the NRA. He was an avid hunter and loved to tinker in his garage.
Friends will be received from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, the Rev. Peggy J. Bonsell officiating. Military honors will be provided and interment will be at Blair Memorial Park. The casket will be closed by request of the deceased.
