Lady Devils get by rival Tyrone in opener

BELLWOOD - Jacqueline Finn had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI as Bellwood-Antis edged Tyrone, 4-3, in a high school softball game Saturday.

Tyrone was the home team, but the game was played in Bellwood.

Emily Nagle added a pair of hits and an RBI for the Lady Blue Devils to back winning pitcher Taylor Payne's eight strikeout, complete game performance.

Kristin Bonsell had two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Eagles. Finnley Christine and Ashley Tepsic added two hits each for Tyrone.

Altoona triumphs

LANCASTER - Altoona defeated Schuylkill Valley, 25-10, 17-25, 15-13, in the finals of the Conestoga Valley Buckskins Classic in high school boys volleyball.

The Mountain Lions were led by a big performance from Tanner Baumgartner. Baumgartner finished with 37 service points, 59 assists, 36 digs, 34 kills, nine aces and eight blocks for the tournament.

Brett Koelle had a team-high 37 kills, and Kody Clawson contributed 36 service points and a team-high 39 digs.

Altoona split with Conestoga Valley, 25-20, 26-27, swept Lake Lehman (25-12, 25-23), swept Unionville (25-12, 25-11) and swept Avon Grove (25-15, 25-23) in pool play.

The Lions topped Dover, 25-13, 25-15 in the semifinals.

Altoona's junior varsity squad also won its tournament, topping Kennard Dale, 25-17, 25-19, in the final. Eric Wineland had 28 assists and 80 assists for Altoona.

BG falls in invite finals

NORTH HUNTINGDON - The Bishop Guilfoyle boys volleyball team made it to the finals of the 16-team Norwin Invitational, falling to Deer Lakes, 25-13, in the championship game.

Guilfoyle opened up pool play in the morning with a 25-15, 25-19 win over Hempfield, followed by a 25-21, 27-26 loss to Bethel Park. In the second pool play, BG lost 25-17, 25-23 to Deer Lakes, then beat Forest Hills, 25-17, 25-14.

BG beat Hempfield (25-15) in the first round, Norwin (25-23) in the quarterfinals, and Peters Township (25-18) in the semifinals.

The Marauders got 38 kills from Nick Little, 33 from Jamey Brumbaugh, and 20 each from Damon Rickens, Ben Kasun and Collin Welteroth.

Brumbaugh added 40 dogs to go with 24 from Kasun, and 20 each from Rickens, Welteroth, Brennan Hurd and Brendan Trybus. Kasun totaled 120 assists on the day.

Brumbaugh led the team in service points with 25.

Tigers juniors take second

BOSWELL - The Hollidaysburg junior high girls volleyball team made it to the finals of the North Star Junior High Tournament Saturday afternoon, only to fall to the host Lady Cougars, 25-16, 25-23.

Hollidaysburg went 9-1 in pool play, thanks to victories over Shade, Richland and Conemaugh Valley. In the semifinals, the Lady Tigers beat Westmont Hilltop, 25-22, 25-11.

Maddy Clapper led the Lady Tigers with 37 service points, including 26 aces, while teammate Emily Baranik added 18 kills and eight blocks. Delaney Hurd contributed 15 digs.

Eight teams competed in the tournament.

Junior Devils roll to win

BELLWOOD - Bellwood-Antis defeated Tyrone, 26-0, in a junior high softball game.

Maddie Miller tossed a three-inning complete game victory for the Lady Devils, and Edyn Convery scored five runs.

Correction

Due to incorrect information provided to the Mirror, the Tussey Mountain softball team's 2012 record was wrong in Friday's edition. Tussey Mountain was 13-8.
