Dzurko, relay team win gold in West swimming districts

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - One swimmer and one relay team from the Greater Johnstown YMCA earned gold medals at the 2013 West Swimming District Meet at Youngstown State University recently.

Madison Dzurko won gold in the 50-yard butterfly in 32.84 seconds and the 100 fly in 1:15.09 in the 10-and-under division and also qualified for YMCA states by placing fifth in the 100 IM.

The Johnstown YMCA medley relay team of Mace Long, Colter Long, Nathan Mihalko and Aaron Cummings also won gold in the 15-18 boys age group with a time of 1:40.07. The team also secured a spot at YMCA nationals.

The top 12 finishers in each event received awards in Youngstown, and Johnstown advanced 13 swimmers to the YMCA Pennsylvania State Swim Meet, which is being held this weekend at Penn State University's McCoy Natatorium.

In the 15-18 boys age group, Mace Long individually qualified for states with a silver medal in the 100 back, a bronze medal in the 100 fly and a fourth-place medal in the 200 fly. Mihalko qualified for states in the 100 back with a bronze medal and the 200 back with a sixth-place medal. Colter Long qualified for states in the 100 breaststroke in seventh place.

In the 15-18 girls age group, the 200 free relay team of Katerina Parowski, Lindsey Aman, Mackenzie Yagodich and Nollaig Noll qualified for states with a bronze-medal performance. Individually, Noll qualifed for states in the 200 IM with a silver medal, the 100 free with a bronze medal and the 50 free with a fourth-place medal. Parowski qualified for states in the 500 free in ninth place.

In the 13-14 girls age group, Claire Atherton qualifed for states in the 200 IM with a fifth-place medal, the 100 back with a sixth-place medal and the 100 fly in eighth place. Gabby Gironda qualified for states in the 100 fly with a silver medal and the 200 fly with a fifth-place medal. Elizabeth Wright qualified for states in the 400 IM with a fifth-place medal.

In addition to Dzurko in the 9-10 girls age group, McKenzie Watt qualified for states in the 100 fly in ninth place.

Others who competed for Johnstown at districts were Cael Long, Herman Zilch IV, Alyssa Kush, Lenox Balogluo, Lauren Mock, Gabrielle Angeletti, Sarah Petry, Jasmine Innis, Morgan Schreyer, Morgan Watt, Jenna Grove, Samantha Gallo, Maisie Supp, Cassidy Saleme, Carly Grove, Ashley Kush, Tristan Miller, Chelsea Gregley, Alexandra Popovich and Courtney Noal.
