A word of thanks goes out to the state trooper who turned off onto a side road from Clover Creek (rural Martinsburg) suspecting a fire at my residence. It was only a small controlled burning, but the smoke said otherwise.
I don't know his name, but I do know his intentions. He stopped, had a short chat and was soon on his way. I'm sure he had more important things to do on that day, but took the time to check out a potential problem. Shame on me for not being a little more appreciative of his concern. That simple gesture on Friday afternoon does a heart good - at least the heart of my family.
To those critics who so often declare the officers' presence is "never at the right place or time," hogwash.
