Schopp, Garbinsky ready for NCAA Championships

Tyrone graduates A.J. Schopp and Ronnie Garbinsky both made the field for the NCAA Division I wrestling championships.

Edinboro's Schopp (29-3), ranked No. 4 at 133 pounds, will wrestle Michigan's Rosario Bruno (14-16) in the opening round on Thursday.

Pitt's Garbinsky (17-10) will wrestle in the 149-pound championships against Nebraska's Jake Sueflohn (22-5), who is ranked No. 9 in the weight class, on Thursday.

The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown baseball team completed its Florida trip 6-2, and several local players had impressive performances.

Cambria Heights graduate John Fees tossed nine innings, struck out eight and got a win.

Nate Plummer, a Bellwood-Antis graduate, pitched five innings of relief with eight strikeouts and did not give up a run.

Bedford graduate Ryan Schnably pitched three scoreless innings of relief to pick up a win against Mercy.

Central graduate Drew Ebersole was 8-for-22 with six RBIs, and Nate Pope, a Hollidaysburg graduate, was 11-for-24 with three RBIs at the plate and pitched seven innings for a win while recording 10 strikeouts.

Aaron Kovach, a Hollidaysburg graduate, was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week recently for his performance on the Mount Aloysius baseball team.

Kovach is batting a team-best .500 with five doubles, a triple and a home run. He also has a team-high 18 RBIs.

Ryan Steinbugl, an Altoona graduate, won the pole vault for the St. Francis track and field team with a mark of 4.70 meters at the Wake Forest Open.

Altoona graduate Chris Carper, who competes for Robert Morris, finished second in the javelin competition with a throw of 232 feet, 6 inches at the Wake Forest Open. The throw broke the Robert Morris school record by more than 15 feet.
