W. Paul Coveney, 80, Lake Hopatcong, N.J., died Feb. 17, 2013, in Lake Hopatcong, N.J., surrounded by his family.
He was born in Ebensburg, son of the late William P. and Mary Catherine (Wineland) Coveney. He married Patricia Kendall on Sept. 15, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his loving and caring wife; four children: Kevin and wife, Dawn, Sean and wife, Debbie, Colleen Rachel and husband, Richard, and Kathleen Higginson and husband, William; nine grandchildren; three siblings: Frances B. Hesser and Grace Coveney, both of Altoona, and Father James B. Coveney of Hollidaysburg; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Louise Blum.
Paul was a graduate of St. Mary's Elementary School and Altoona Catholic High School, where in 1950 he won the Joe Cohen Blanket Award as the most valuable player of the Altoona Catholic High School football team. He graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.
He enrolled in the U.S. Army after graduation from high school and served in the Korean War. He was first in the seventh class of Chieti NCO School, and Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion dominated the graduating class led by Cpl. Paul Coveney. He was awarded top honors and was voted best all-around soldier in the class.
Paul was a very dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Mount Arlington, N.J. He was an avid reader, and after retirement, he assisted his son in the construction business.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 416 Sixth Ave., Altoona, Father James B. Coveney officiating. Friends of Paul and family friends are welcome to attend.
