John M. "Moose" Mottner, 90, Altoona, died Wednesday evening at Golden LivingCenter-Hillview after a brief illness.
He was born in Gottoredorf, Germany, son of the late Michael and Anna (Dietrich) Mottner. He married Elsie Steinbugl, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sisters: Ann M. Baumgartner of Altoona and Caroline Cooney of Bel Air, Md. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Julie Hinterberger.
John was a 1941 graduate of Altoona High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, and he retired from Conrail as a machinist after more than 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Altoona, where he served as an usher for many years, a life member of Unter Uns and Bavarian Aid Society, and a member of the Swiss Club and Knights of Columbus.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling and was a member of the Blair County Bowling Hall of Fame.
Friends will be received from 3 to 6 p.m. today at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Altoona, by Monsignor Timothy Stein. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery.
