Ten teams from the Mirror coverage area will open PIAA basketball tournament play next weekend, and almost half of them will start a trip they hopes leads to Hershey in Altoona.
Both Bishop Guilfoyle entries as well as the Hollidaysburg girls and Penn Cambria boys -- all District 6 champions -- will tip off interdistrict playoff action at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse. Three other area squads will be in action at Central Cambria High School in Ebensburg, while two teams will play at Pitt-Johnstown.
Only the Bellwood-Antis girls, the District 6 Class AA runners-up, will be traveling outside the region, going to Plum High School near Pittsburgh to play WPIAL third-place team Burrell.
The PIAA determined sites and times in a conference call on Sunday morning.
On Friday, the Hollidaysburg girls and Guilfoyle boys will take part in a doubleheader at the AAHS Fieldhouse. The Lady Tigers start things off against Penn-Trafford in Class AAAA action at 6 p.m., with the Marauders to follow in Class A against Smethport at 7:30.
The BG girls, trying to make it back to the Class A state championship game after a year's absence, will play in the middle game of a tripleheader at Altoona High on Saturday. The Lady Marauders meet Johnsonburg at 5:30 p.m.
That will be preceded by Penn Cambria's Class AA boys clash with WPIAL power Greensburg Central Catholic at 4. The State College and North Allegheny boys will wrap things up at 7.
Bishop Carroll, the runner-up to Guilfoyle in District 6 Class A boys, won't have far to go for its first game of states -- the Huskies are part of a tripleheader at Central Cambria on Friday that includes the Blairsville girls and Johnstown boys. BC plays in the nightcap at 8 p.m. Carroll is matched with District 5 runner-up Shanksville-Stonycreek.
Two other area teams are in action on Friday night. In addition to the Bellwood girls, who play at 6, the District 5 Class AA champion Everett girls take on Mohawk out of the WPIAL at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown at 6 p.m.
Saturday's action at Central Cambria includes the Portage girls and Northern Cambria boys sandwiched in games around the Class AAA Forest Hills girls. The Lady Mustangs play Berlin Brothersvalley for the third time this season in a Class A tilt at 4 p.m. Northern Cambria battles Apollo-Ridge in Class AA at 7.
The Juniata Valley girls hit the court on Saturday, as well; the Lady Hornets are paired with District 5 Class A runner-up Southern Fulton at 4 p.m. at UPJ.
