’Cat fights the Law, and Law doesn’t win

March 3, 2013
By Todd Irwin ( , The Altoona Mirror

JOHNSTOWN - Between the District 6 finals two weeks ago and the Southwest Regional Class AA Tournament, Huntingdon freshman Collin Glorioso and coach Jon Mykut came up with a new gameplan against Forest Hills' Triston Law.

They had to because Law beat Glorioso, 4-0, in the district finals. But two weeks later, Glorioso was on his game.

Glorioso claimed the ultra deep 106-pound weight class by avenging that districts loss to Law, 3-0, in the finals Saturday night at the Cambria County War Memorial.

"It feels amazing," Glorioso said. "I knew it would be a hard match to win. It all came down to neutral. I knew neutral was the big point in the match."

"It feels awesome," Huntingdon coach Jon Mykut said. "He had a great tournament. He's wrestled super all year-long, and he just kept it going. Obviously, we game-planned a little bit, and we saw what Law wanted to do in the district finals match, and we tried to stay away from that this match."

The area's only other finalist, Bedford 120-pounder Ryan Easter, wasn't as fortunate. Easter dropped a 4-3 overtime tiebreaker decision to Ligonier Valley's Josh Patrick to become a three-time regional runner-up.

"Patrick was a little bit better wrestler than Ryan tonight," Bedford coach Brian Creps said, "but it goes back-and-forth. Last year, Ryan beat him at regionls and lost to him at states. Maybe this year, it will go the other way around."

In all, 11 area wrestlers qualified from the regional meatgrinder to the PIAA Championships.

Bedford's Tanner Williams (152), Chestnut Ridge's Tyler Dibert (170), Moshannon Valley's James Stodart (195) and Tussey Mountain's Mitchell Hall (285) placed third. Ridge's Dan Albright (195) and Austin Buttry (285) placed fourth, as did Claysburg-Kimmel's Josh Brown (113) and Bedford's Caleb Grimes (170) finished fourth .

Area wrestlers went 1-for-7 in the fifth-place bouts, with only Mo Valley's Jake Ludwig (220) winning. That list excluded Bedford's Michael Brett (182), who injured his back when Cambria Heights' Tyler Crawford was called for a slam on what Creps called a drill-back and disqualified in the consolation quarterfinals.

Brett was carted off to a hospital after lying for several minutes on the mat. Brett never took the mat after that, defaulting out of the tournament but earning a sixth-place medal.

"It was an unfortunate situation to be drilled back like that," Creps said. "Kids just don't get back after getting drilled back like that. He came here this evening and had intentions of wanting to wrestle, but the reality is he was just too hurt. Every time he started to run a little bit or warm up, it just tightened right back up.

"I don't think Crawford had any intent to hurt him, but moves like that are very, very dangerous."

Heights' Joe Davis (120) and Levi Niebauer (152), Ridge's Aaron Burkett (106), Central's Kale Burket (113), Bedford's Garrett Thomas (126) and Mo Valley's Jack Bunnell (285) placed sixth - falling a place shy of qualifying for states.

South Fayette won the team title by five points over Burrell, 88-83, and Bedford (74) was third. Chestnut Ridge, which led Bedford by a point coming into the day, finished fifth with 63 points - two points behind Jefferson-Morgan (65).

"We wanted to win the championship," Creps said, "but I told each of the kids, they had to take care of their own business. South Fayette has some really great individuals, and they had a couple more placewinners than we did."

"Tough tournament," Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. "Lot of tough kids here, lot of great schools. We're taking three to states, and three is a good number. We thought we had a couple chances with some other guys, but it didn't work out."

Dibert lost a 6-5 ultimate tiebreaker heartbreaker to South Fayette's Mike Fetchet in the semifinals, but he came back with a pin in the consolation semis and a 7-1 win over Grimes in the consy finals. Fetchet dropped a 4-3 overtime tiebreaker decision to Jefferson-Morgan's Dustin Conti in the finals.

"Dibert wrestled tough," Lazor said. "[In the semis], there were a couple different times he could have actually pulled the match out. It was just a battle between two great wrestlers."

When Glorioso (35-4) and Law (29-4) wrestled the first time, Law beat the Bearcat on his feet. This time, they went through a scoreless first period and second period on their feet, with Glorioso nearly getting a takedown at the edge of the mat in the second.

Law chose to go with his best position and released Glorioso at the beginning of the third. Then, around the halfway point, Glorioso struck at the edge of the mat, getting a takedown. It was the knockout punch, because from there, he rode very tough and was in control until the final second ticked off the clock.

When time ran out, Glorioso, who pinned Burgettstown's Austin McDermitt in the semis, jumped up and down in celebration and slapped Mykut's hand when he came back to his corner.

"I'm surprised I did this well," Glorioso said. "I had some pretty tough kids in this competition. I knew it wouldn't be an easy rode. The only thing is, I knew I had an easier way to the semis than most kids did. Some kids had the top six kids [in the state] right off the bat."

"When you get hot at the right time, which I think he is right now, it's a good time of the year to be like that," Mykut said. "He's definitely peaking, and hopefully he can continue it over to next weekend."

Patrick (27-0) struck first, notching a takedown in the first period, which Easter (33-2) later said was a key point in the bout.

"I wrestled great," Easter said. "I just didn't get the corner on my head inside single, and if I would have finished that, I would have won. He really didn't do anything after he got that first takedown. I probably should have pressed the issue a little more on my feet."

Patrick rode for the first 1:55 of the second before Easter escaped to draw within one. Patrick was hit with his second stall call with 7 seconds left in the bout, tying the score, 2-2, and sending it into overtime.

After a scoreless OT, Easter was trying to escape in the first rideout, but in a flurry Patrick scored two nearfall points.

"He felt like he was going to get out and get the one," Creps said, "but he wanted to get the reversal because he wanted to win it right there. It backfired and he ended up on his back."

Easter got another stalling point in the second rideout, but it wasn't enough as Patrick won his first regional title.

"At least I'm moving on," Easter said. "That's the main thing."

For Easter, this was the most stinging of his three regional silver medals. He lost to Kittanning's Jason Nolf in two previous finals, 8-0 last season and 5-1 two years ago.

"This one is definitely the hardest one," Easter said, "because I was just so close."
