Long, Flaugh follow gold medals with silvers

March 3, 2013
From Mirror reports , The Altoona Mirror

UNIVERSITY PARK - When Central's Taylor Flaugh and Hollidaysburg's Mace Long left the Penn State Natatorium Friday night, they knew they had qualified for the PIAA state meet in high school swimming in their respective events.

After returning home to Blair County on Saturday, they are in wait-and-see mode this morning.

At the District 6 Class AA Championships on Saturday, Flaugh finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:27.27. In Class AAA, Hollidaysburg's Mace Long finished second in the 100 backstroke in 52.92.

Now, both swimmers and their coaches will wait today to see if they qualify for the state meet in two weeks at Bucknell University in those events. The top 16 in each event go. Those are the first-place winners in all of the districts involved. After that, the next best 16 times qualify. Flaugh and Long have times worthy of the next best 16, according to their coaches.

Hollidaysburg coach Deb Solomon isn't worried.

"I think he is going to get in because of that time," said Solomon, who watched Long win gold on Friday in the 100 butterfly. "The kid from State College [Alex Hillsley] barely beat Mace. His time was 52.13. Mace's was 52.92."

Central coach Amanda Herr didn't want to make a prediction.

"I think it is too close to call," she said. "But [Flaugh] did a great job. She had all personal bests in all her events."

They were the only two local swimmers to qualify for states this weekend.

Other Tigers to compete Saturday included Colter Long, who finished third with a school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.23). Both Longs, Brian Flynn and Max Gehringer helped the 400 freestyle relay take second (3:26.97). The girls' Casey Holiday finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.64).

"I think there are a lot of great things ahead for this class," Solomon said. "Many of our placewinners will be back next year, and I am looking forward to great things from them."

Altoona, which also competed at the Class AAA level, got a third-place finish from its girls 400 freestyle relay team of Brianna Geist, Addison Cummings, Francesca Ferguson and Hannah Jacobs (4:11.51). The boys' 400 freestyle relay team of Connor Hallinan, Aaron Cummings, Steve Betar and Kyle Heasley took third (3:32.84).

"I think it was a major success for us," Altoona coach Andy Smearman said. "We had tremendous time drops, even compared to Friday. We had everyone in the meet with a personal best."

The Central girls' 400 freestyle relay team of Ivy Tomlinson, Jena Gunnett, Alyssa Clark and Flaugh took second in a school-record time of 3:54.52.
