Red Flash fall in double-overtime

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Central Connecticut State survived a barrage of 14 St. Francis 3-pointers to come away with an 84-81 double-OT win Thursday at Detrick Gymnasium.

Despite coming up short, the Red Flash continued their recent strong play by attempting a program-record 38 3-pointers led by surging rookie Ben Millaud-Meunier, who was 6 for 9 from beyond the arc on his way to a team-best 21 points.

St. Francis freshman Greg Brown added 20 points while dishing out seven assists and picking up four steals. Sophomores Ollie Jackson (18) and Earl Brown (12) rounded out SFU's double-digit scorers.

"We like our guys to play with confidence on the offensive side of the floor," SFU coach Rob Krimmel said. "We had some guys hitting shots. It wasn't necessarily our game plan going in, but we were just try to get and take the best shot."

The Blue Devils (13-15, 9-8 Northeast Conference) led 39-30 at halftime, but a layup by Jackson with 0:02 left forced overtime. St. Francis (5-23, 5-12) led 75-72 in the first OT, but Central Connecticut's Malcolm McMillan was fouled on a 3-point shot and made three free throws to tie it.

Greg Brown scored all six Red Flash points in the second overtime, but Hunter (7-for-7 at the line) scored four points, including two foul shots with 2:03 left for an 84-79 lead. The Blue Devils hit 15-of-16 free throws.

St. Francis grabbed three offensive boards in the game's final 1:20 but was unable to find the tying shot.

"In the second half we got down a little bit early but our guys battled back," Krimmel said. "We made shots when we needed them and got stops when we needed to get stops. When we play hard and play together like we did tonight, we put ourselves in a position to win basketball games."

Matt Hunter scored 23 points to lead Central Connecticut.

The Red Flash wrap up their 107th varsity campaign with a visit to Bryant on Saturday. The tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
