Stun guns appreciated

February 19, 2013
The Altoona Mirror

I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards the Blair County police force, along with those who had anything to do with the Operation Our Town grant, with regard to the new multi-purpose immobilizing devices administered to the county jail.

Providing several stun guns to the Blair County jail was a valid idea. To those who took the time to complete the eight-hour certification course and agreed to partake in an annual refresher course, it is much appreciated.

Being a student at Penn State Altoona, a short 20 minutes from the jail, it is comforting knowing that since the numbers of inmates have been on a constant rise for the past few months, police officers are taking extra precautions to keep the community safe.

Phil Ray's article, "County jail receives three stun guns" provides the community with information on how much the police force has to do in order to be certified to use the stun guns. It is promising to read that Blair County's Warden Michael M. Johnston plans on having every police officer trained to be able to use the devices.

The police force keeps the community safe, but at the same time its safety is equally as important. The article states that the three stun guns will be divided among those who transport inmates, the armory at the jail, and the new Central Booking Center.

With a higher number of inmates, the police need to do all they can do to protect themselves in case a situation occurs, and because of that I want to commend everyone who had something to do with Operation Our Town grant for raising the money for these new devices to keep our police force protected.

I cannot express how grateful I am for all the hard work and time the Blair County police force puts towards keeping us safe.
