Tyrone mat star will miss tourney

Tyrone's D.J. Wunder has been experiencing a lot of ups and downs over the last week, and his situation turned really bad on Wednesday - two days before the District 6 Class AA Tournament starts - when he was declared academically ineligible by the Tyrone Area School District.

Wunder, who was cleared medically on Tuesday after coming down with impetigo, a skin disease that caused him to miss last Tuesday's Penns Valley match and the Juniata Valley Tournament, got the news after eighth period Wednesday afternoon from athletic director Tom Coleman, who is his uncle, and principal Thomas Yoder.

"They really felt bad about it, and they understood how much it meant to me, but they said rules are rules," Wunder said. "I think I got gypped, but it was kind of my fault."

Wunder, a senior who scored a 1310 on his SATs, didn't turn in assignments in statistics and physics while he was sick, and his grades slipped.

"After my match against Clearfield [Jan. 31], I spent all weekend in bed, and I was sick all the time," Wunder said. "I was like a hermit in the house. I missed school on Monday, went to school Tuesday and left early, and I left early Wednesday because of a doctor's appointment. Between being sick and not being cleared, I guess I wasn't looking at my grades. I always do well in class, but I guess they dropped too far.

"I had no clue I was failing two classes. I had two assignments that I didn't turn in. I can't blame anyone but myself. I hope colleges don't think I'm slacking, and I'm still working out and trying to get better."

Wunder finished with a 21-4 record, and he was the second seed for the District 6 Class AA Tournament at 195 behind Moshannon Valley's returning champion James Stodart, who beat the Golden Eagle, 3-1, earlier in the season.

"I was looking forward to the district tournament so bad," Wunder said. "I was the second seed, and I was itching to wrestle Stodart again. But, I guess everything happens for a reason."
