Guilfoyle’s seniors shine on night they’re honored

The Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School Lady Marauders celebrated their senior night appropriately Monday night.

All eight of BG's graduating seniors - Halee Adams, Kayla Bates, Brittany Boslet, Devin Stessney, Elyssa Ehredt, Kristen Miller, Alexis Craig, and Lexi Luciano - saw significant playing time, and all made contributions as BG sailed past Cambria Heights, 64-33 in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Section I game at the Pleasant Valley gymnasium.

The Sienna University-bound Adams shared game-scoring honors with 13 points, while Mount St. Mary's University signee Bates added 12 and Miller registered a solid 12-point, nine-rebound outing.

Stessney scored eight points, Craig hit two 3-pointers for six points, Boslet and Ehredt had five points apiece, and Luciano chipped in another 3-pointer.

"It was nice when you think about how long ago they all started playing together, and having them on all on the floor together tonight made for a great night,'' veteran BG coach Mark Moschella said of his senior players.

BG's veteran team had things pretty much its way against a young Heights squad which has only two seniors on its roster. The Lady Marauders had a 19-7 lead after one quarter and a 35-19 advantage at intermission.

Adams scored seven points in the first half, while Stessney, Craig and Miller chipped in six apiece and Bates had five.

"They're a good team,'' Heights coach Tracy Neff said of BG. "They spread the ball around, and half their players were in double digits. They should go far in the district tournament.''

BG improved to 20-1 overall and stayed unbeaten in the conference section, hiking its record there to 10-0. Miller helped the Lady Marauders fashion a 25-17 advantage in rebounds.

"Kristen Miller played strong,'' Moschella said. "She scored in double figures for us, played defense and rebounded well, and did a great job on both ends of the floor.''

Heights (8-13 overall and 3-6 in the conference section) made a mild bid to get back in the game in the third quarter, when the Lady Highlanders scored seven of the period's first 11 points to draw to within 13 points, 39-26.

But BG responded with a field goal and free throw by Adams, and Bates' 3-pointer, to take a 45-26 lead into the fourth quarter.

"We were down 16 points at halftime, and we knocked three points off that, but they rallied back,'' Neff said of BG. "They don't quit, and they can shoot well.''

BG's game Monday served as a tune-up for the Lady Marauders' showdown with crosstown rival Altoona at the Pleasant Valley gym tonight. The game will also be BG's regular-season finale.

"That will be a nice game for both of us at this time of the year,'' Moschella said. "It will be like a playoff atmosphere. It's a good way for us to end our regular season.''
