George A. Vermeulen Sr., 80, Cresson, died Wednesday at home.
He was born in Lilly, son of the late George J. and Sophia (Zentack) Vermeulen. He married Roberta Boland on March 3, 1956, in Cresson.
Surviving are his wife; six children: George Jr. (Donna Skiles) of Lancaster, Valerie (Kevin Smith) of Lilly, Gary (Debbie Lowmaster) of Cresson, Tina (Edward Fuller) of Cresson, Susan (Donald Yogus) of Gallitzin and Lisa (Charles Mack) of Ebensburg; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Gloria (Charles Stanko) of Phoenixville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved pet, Ginger.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Chester; and two great-grandsons: Nathan and Liam Wagner.
George was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving as a technical sergeant and retiring after 20 years of service. He retired in 1985 from the Ebensburg Center as a pipe and steam fitter. His entire life was dedicated to baseball, including managing, coaching and directing leagues for players of all ages.
George was a member of the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, Cresson American Legion Post 238, Sankertown VFW Post 7377 and St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Notre Dame football fan.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at St. Aloysius Church, the Very Rev. John D. Byrnes officiating. Committal will be at the church cemetery with military graveside rites by Cresson American Legion, Sankertown VFW and other local veteran organizations.
