Walter J. Lynam

Walter J. Lynam, 82, Altoona, died Monday at Union Avenue and 31st Street as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Joseph N. and Amber Elizabeth (Hoyer) Lynam. He married Patricia June Killinger on Feb. 3, 1951, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Altoona, and she died Feb. 4, 2013, as well.

Surviving are five children: Cherrie Malady of Dubuque, Iowa, and Patty A. Hicks and husband, John, Michele Civils, Walter B. and wife, Amanda, and Dennis J. and wife, Nicole E., all of Altoona; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Walter was the last of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Walter B. Lynam III; and three brothers: Joseph, James and Sam.

Walter attended Altoona High School. He retired in October 2009 as a self-employed owner/partner at Carpet Warehouse with 54 years of service. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona.

Walter enjoyed watching Notre Dame games with his family, talking to people and giving them candy.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona, Monsignor Stanley B. Carson and Father Robert G. Lynam concelebrating. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
