Duo leads SFU women to victory

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - The St. Francis women's basketball team won its third consecutive game as they took down the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 64-53, at the Pope Physical Education Center on Saturday.

The Red Flash (12-8, 7-2) got 17 points each from Shene Fleming and Alli Williams, while the Terriers (7-13, 4-5) were led by Sarah Benedetti. Benedetti scored 11 of the first 13 SFC points and hit five three-pointers in the first half to finish with 24 points.

Williams was held scoreless in the first half for the second straight contest. Her first basket came with 15:30 remaining in the second half. The junior forward finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double effort of the season.

St. Francis trailed the majority of the game until they went on a 9-2 run midway through the second half sparked by a basket and a free throw from Fleming. The pass came from Brittany Lilley and it was one of her game-high nine assists, tying a season-high.

The SFU defense forced 18 Terriers turnovers and held them to 36 percent shooting for the game.

Only two free throws were attempted in the first half, Rhonda Watts split a pair at the charity stripe with just 1:30 remaining.

Brooklyn Taylor provided a spark off the bench for SFU, knocking down two triples to score eight points. Rebecca Sparks also contributed scoring a career-high six points.

St. Francis returns to action on Monday evening as they face LIU Brooklyn at 7 p.m.
