Elwood Raymond Smith, 87, Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of Bakers Summit, rural New Enterprise, went home to be with the Lord Thursday at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, with his family by his side.
He was born near Martinsburg, son of the late G. Clair and Elda (Bossler) Smith. He formerly was married to Mary McConahy.
Surviving are five daughters: Jane Fagans (Jim) of Martinsburg, Patricia Bowman (Jim) of New Enterprise, Gloria Guyer (Dan) of Morristown, Tenn., Amanda Feight (Wayne) of Loysburg and Dorcas Holm (Jeff) of Woodbury; a son, Richard (Beverly) of New Enterprise; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers: George and Donald; and two sisters: Madeline Goldberg and Genive Underwood.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Allan Bowman; a sister, Beatrice Slick; and three brothers: James, Marion and Harold.
Elwood was a 1943 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the European theater, and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a dairy farmer for more than 60 years near Bakers Summit, and he was an active lifelong member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg.
Friends will be received from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, Pastor Scott E. Schul officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be given to St. Matthew Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Morrisons Cove Memorial Park, Martinsburg.
