West Branch advances past CH

The Altoona Mirror

MORRISDALE - Cambria Heights was able to pull off a come from behind 39-38 victory over Moshannon Valley with a Michael Dautlick pin of Joey Vanish in 3:21 in the first match of a District 6 Class AA Duals doubleheader.

The eighth-seeded Highlanders, however, fell to top-seeded West Branch, 48-22, in the second match Wednesday night.

Against West Branch (22-2), which will wrestle fifth-seeded Penns Valley at 10 a.m. Saturday at Tyrone in the semifinals, the Highlanders (12-5) hung tough in the first 11 weights, finding themselves down by eight, 30-22, but the Warriors picked up two pins and a forfeit in the last three weights.

Travis Yahner (152) had Heights' only pin, but Levi Niebauer took Luke Slippey down with 1.5 seconds left to win, 3-1, at 160, and Aaron Gill knocked off Morgan Selepack, 8-4, at 285. It was Gill's second big win of the night after earning a 5-2 win over Mo Valley's Jake Ludwig, the area's top 220-pounder who moved up to 285.

"We've got good wrestlers too, but they've got good wrestlers from top to bottom," Heights coach Mike Eckenrode said. "That's what makes them No. 1. Niebauer is tough. There were a couple wins I was hoping for."

Ninth-seeded Mo Valley (9-7) got pins from Ryan Thomas (138), Cody Hamilton (152), Kent Stewart (195) and James Stodart (220) to build a 38-24 lead going into the last three weights. Gill's win, Mark Zabinski's forfeit win - one of five forfeit victories for Heights - and Dautlick's pin pushed Heights past the Black Knights.

"Dautlick was the man of the night there," Eckenrode said. "He came through for us. That was huge."
