William J. Taafe Jr., 70, Duncansville, died Friday at his home.
He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, son of the late William J. Sr. and Catherine (Dolan) Taafe.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane (McAtee), with whom he shared 45 years of marriage; a daughter, Christine Marie Gaunt and husband, Michael, of Lansdale; a son, William J. III and wife, Julie, of Canonsburg; three grandchildren: Troy L. Beck Jr. and Madeleine and Molly Gaunt; a sister, Susan Marie Hunsicker of Bradenton, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, William J. McAtee.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Carole Ann Walsh; and a brother, Kenneth J.
He was a 1960 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio, and earned a B.A. in business administration from Youngstown State University and a master's degree in accounting in 1972 from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He served in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in Miesau, Germany, during the Vietnam conflict.
He retired from accounting/sales at IBM after 30 years of service and then owned his own business, Spokes-n-Skis in Lakemont, for the past 10 years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, and also belonged to Blair Bicycle Club, Allegheny Ski & Sports Club and Professional Ski Instructors of America. He was a supporter of the MS Society and Rails to Trails of Central Pennsylvania.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg, where a vigil service will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, by Father Anthony J. Legarski. Committal will be at New St. Mary Cemetery, Hollidaysburg, with military honors provided by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard.
