BG’s Adams, Stessney avoid serious injury

January 25, 2013
By Jim Lane , The Altoona Mirror

The news was all good out of the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic Lady Marauders' basketball camp Thursday.

Not surprisingly, the Lady Marauders hammered Somerset, 64-10, in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference non-division game at the Pleasant Valley gym. BG is now 14-1 overall, while Somerset is 3-13.

The other positive news was that senior standouts Halee Adams and Devin Stessney weren't injured as badly as first feared. Both were hurt in Monday's game at Richland.

Adams, who missed a lot of last season with a knee injury, was not in uniform Thursday, but coach Mark Moschella said she should return Saturday when BG hosts Greater Johnstown.

"She came down off of a jump shot in Richland and felt something," Moschella said, "and then some swelling started to occur.

"They ran all the tests today, and she got a good report," Moschella continued. "She's feeling good, so she'll be back in the lineup Saturday."

Stessney missed a couple days of practice and didn't start last night, but she didn't appear to miss a beat when she came off the bench early and scored 13 points to share game honors with teammate Brittany Boslet.

"Devin had a bruised thigh," Moschella said of Stessney's injury. "She didn't practice the last two days, so we just wanted to bring her off the bench, and I thought she made a nice, quick recovery.

"She really played well on both ends of the floor tonight."

BG jumped out to a 7-0 lead on buckets by Kristin Miller, Alexis Craig and Boslet. After Somerset's Jay Martin hit a deuce and a trey to make it 7-5, the Marauders ran off the last 12 points of the quarter - seven by Stessney - and the rout was on.

BG tallied 18 points in the second quarter and held Somerset to a single foul shot by Julie Barron to build a 37-6 lead at the half.

Kayla Bates' 3-pointer hiked the BG advantage to 47-6 at the 4:22 mark of the third quarter and put the running clock/mercy rule in motion.

Moschella said he expects all of his players to be ready and he was not surprised by the play of Miller and Craig, who started in place of Adams and Stessney.

"This is a senior group," Moschella said, "and [there's] a lot of senior leadership. I don't want to take a step backwards when we go to our bench and I thought Kristin Miller did a really nice job tonight. She rebounded the ball well and played good defense.

"Alexis Craig did a nice job, too, with some things on the floor."

Bates finished with 10 points and said the Lady Marauders were focused, despite the lopsided result.

"In games like this, we're trying to work on everything we do," Bates said. "We're just trying to get better."

BG didn't push the ball the second half, preferring to run a set offense.

"We were working on our offenses," Bates said. "Halee's absence kind of throws us off a little but we can adjust. We're a tight group and play really well together.

"I'm glad she'll be back Saturday."

Moschella concurred that "we didn't want to push the ball the second half."

"We certainly weren't trying to do anything crazy with the scoreboard," he said. "[Somerset's] working hard to build a program and they're young.

"Defensively, we didn't quit, we showed a lot of energy, and I was happy with that."
