Donna D. Mapes, 78, Roaring Spring, died Friday afternoon at her residence.
She was born in Roaring Spring, daughter of the late Blair J. and Goldie (Pollard) Ray. She married Paul H. Mapes on Nov. 9, 1952. He died Oct. 9, 1997.
She is survived by four children: Douglas P. Mapes and wife, Pam, of Milton, Pa., Joseph D. Mapes and wife, Pam, of Melrose, Mass., Richard "Dick" Mapes and wife, Shirley, of Bloomsburg, Pa., and Sharlene L. Sottile and husband, Robert, of Roaring Spring; 11 grandchildren: Carla Mapes, Donald Mapes, Jason Mapes and wife, Mandy, Amanda Mapes, Amy Umholtz and husband, Scott, Jen Fisher and husband, Sean, Lesley Yuhas and husband, Jarrad, RJ Sottile, Patrick Sottile, Nicole Sottile and Lauren Sottile; and five great-grandchildren: Lillian Mapes, Mason Dellinger, Davlyn Fisher, Keegan Yuhas and Marrah Mapes. She is also survived by a brother and three sisters: Ronald "Buck" Ray of Roaring Spring, Rhonda Hamilton of Covington, Va., Patty Brumbaugh of Roaring Spring and Karen Wisor of Roaring Spring.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Darla K. Claycomb.
She attended the Canoe Creek United Methodist Church.
She was a 1952 graduate of Roaring Spring High School.
She retired in 1999 from the Spring Cove School District as head cook at the East Freedom Elementary School, with more than 30 years of service.
Donna was the "Yard Sale Queen" and enjoyed needlework, and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. She had previously taught Sunday School at the Faith Assembly of God, Roaring Spring, had organized and served as head cook for the Central High School football team summer camp for many years, and was previously a member of the Friendship Volunteer Fire Dept., Ladies Auxiliary.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Albright Church of the Brethren by Gordon Trimer, worship leader at Canoe Creek United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Roaring Spring.
