Brenneman triumphs in Jaffa fight

Hollidaysburg Area High School product Charlie Brenneman is back in the winner's circle.

Brenneman, known as "The Spaniard,'' defeated Missouri's Eric Irvin in Saturday's night's "Broad Avenue Brawlers Five,'' a Valley Fight League 40 mixed martials arts and boxing card at Altoona's Jaffa Shrine.

Brenneman caught Irvin in a rear-naked choke hold at the 2:09 mark of the second period of the featured bout.

Brenneman, no longer fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and having dropped down from the welterweight division to lightweight, improved his professional record to 16-5.

Irvin's record fell to 5-2.

In other professional matches, Altoona's Brett Shoenfelt won by tap-out when he locked up Bobby Ferrier in a guillotine choke hold at the 2:07 mark of the first round.

United High School and University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown product Eli Garshnick won by tap-out with a key hold on Donald Crawford Jr. at the 2:49 mark of the first round.

Cory Popanz won by triangle choke over Matt Dean at the 4:07 mark of the first round.

In amateur fights, Ryan Everhart scored a technical knockout of Johnstown's Jordan Haselrig, the son of former Pittsburgh Steeler Carlton Haselrig.

Blacklick Valley High School graduate Curtis Link won by tap-out at the 1:57 mark over Nick Kerr, Roman Swayner defeated Altoona native Paul Riggleman due to injury retirement, and Brandon Lux won in the third round when Scott Athey retired.

In a female match, Rachel Gray decisioned Melanie Bremer.

In a featured cruiserweight boxing match, Harvey Jolly won by decision over Johnstown native Andres Taylor. The loss dropped Taylor's record to 21-4-2.

Also in boxing, Jeremiah Witherspoon and Rocky Burch fought to a draw.

In a Muay Thai bout, Roman Taylor knocked out Luke Hess in the second round.
