Millionaires take it up notch against Tigers

January 16, 2013
By Jim Lane - For the Mirror , The Altoona Mirror

HOLLIDAYSBURG - Hollidaysburg Area High School boys basketball coach Mick Pentoney had just watched his Golden Tigers be thumped by Williamsport, and he couldn't help but think about two seasons ago.

Pentoney's Golden Tigers were a senior-laden team then and rolled over most of their opponents, including a young Williamsport squad.

Now, the roles are reversed. Hollidaysburg is young and inexperienced. Williamsport has a veteran outfit and is considered among the state's elite Class AAAA teams.

The Millionaires manhandled the Tigers, 76-47, Tuesday night at the HAHS gym, scoring 76 points without attempting a 3-point shot.

"That's old-school basketball," Pentoney said. "Shoot inside 10 [feet].

"We've seen them play before, and they don't [shoot 3s]. They have a great inside game, they have guys who can put it on the deck, they go chase the rebounds and, as seniors, they really know position and are there before you even have a chance.

"They're around the corner before you know it, and that's the difference between seniors and underclassmen."

Surprisingly, Hollidaysburg led 17-15 after one quarter, thanks to a 7-0 run in the final minute.

"We stayed in it in the first, but the second quarter got away from us," Pentoney said. "Their coaches do a great job of having them play hard, and I think they're going to have a really good run in the playoffs."

It was all Williamsport after the first quarter. The Billtowners outscored the Tigers, 19-2, in the second quarter, forcing the hosts into 11 turnovers while holding them to one field goal by Brian Urban, who was the Tigers' lone bright spot with 19 points.

"I thought Brian Urban played really well," Pentoney said.

"The past few games we've been getting off to slow starts," Williamsport coach Allen Taylor said. "It's been taking us awhile to get in gear, and, I don't know if we're just trying to get our legs or what, but we definitely have to have better starts.

"I was pleased with our effort and intensity in the second quarter," Taylor said. "I think it was a 19-2 run, and that was pretty much the tell-all."

Now 12-2, Williamsport got a career-best 29 points from Jahad Thomas and received double-digit performances from 6-foot-6 center Chris Kinley (15) and Achilles Watson (13).

"Number 5 [Thomas] is a major matchup problem," Pentoney said, "because he's a big, heavy guard."

"We usually have about four people in double figures," Taylor said. "It's not always the same four but, for the most part, we share the basketball and are pretty unselfish."

Even though the Tigers are now 3-9, Pentoney saw a silver lining.

"I look at it as a loss-win when we play a team of that caliber, so we can get better," Pentoney said. "Kids don't understand how good basketball is until you see that kind of play."
