LOYSBURG - Chestnut Ridge hadn't wrestled since going 4-1 at the Dale Bock Duals in Chambersburg on Dec. 29.
So, while there might have been a little bit of rust on the Lions, they were looking forward to tangling with fellow once-beaten Northern Bedford on Tuesday before a standing room only crowd squeezed into the Panthers' small home gym.
Ridge handled the layoff and the crowd with its usual ease, and the Lions avoided bonus points by Northern's big guns from 132 to 145, a stretch that included Mason Replogle's 4-2 win over Trent Crouse, and earned a 54-9 win over the Panthers.
"I was happy with how we performed," Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. "I was a little worried about rust, but I thought they wrestled hard and moved well, so I'm pleased."
"Tuesday night, we wrestled with a lot of intensity against Bellwood [a 60-10 win], and I thought they'd bring that intensity tonight," said NBC coach Brian Dutchcot, whose team is now 8-2. "It seems we lack confidence against good teams, and it showed tonight. Give all the credit in the world to Chestnut Ridge."
The match, which started a little more than an hour after the 7 p.m. starting time because of the junior high and five JV bouts, started with a couple talented 220-pounders tangling. NBC's Eric Grace got the opening takedown of Dan Albright, but Albright notched two takedowns - the last one with 8 seconds left to win, 6-2.
"We were worried about Albright," Lazor said. "He's been under the weather for a couple days, and we were debating about whether to wrestle him or not because we know Grace is such a quality wrestler. But, he wanted to do it, and he did all right."
Pins by Austin Buttry at 285 and Aaron Burkett at 106 gave Ridge a 15-0 lead. In one of the tossup bouts, Ridge 113-pounder Blake Dunlap broke open a scoreless tie with Trey Childers with a third-period reversal. He added two nearfall points for a 4-0 win.
At 120, Jared Helsley built a 7-0 lead on Ridge's Sam Shank, but Shank made a furious comeback. He reversed and cradled Helsley for three points in the second and cradled again in the third to get the fall in 4:45. Ridge led 24-0.
After Ridge's Derrick Claar won by fall at 126, the stage was set for the anticipated bout between Replogle and Crouse. Crouse scored the opening takedown, but Replogle reversed with 15 seconds left in the first period.
Crouse rode for much of the second until Replogle reversed with 33 seconds remaining. Replogle, a bear on top, rode the talented sophomore the entire final period to get the win.
"Everybody was looking forward to that match between Crouse and Replogle," Dutchcot said. "They lived up to it, I think. It's nice to get that confidence for Mason, especially with Bedford coming in Saturday."
"It's always a good battle between the two of them," Lazor said. "To be honest, I thought we looked good on our feet. We got high twice and gave up two reversals. Replogle is a beast on top. That's no secret."
At 138, Damian Corle survived getting taken down by Colby Hillegass in the first period to win, 7-4. NBC's top-ranked Drew Gartland earned a 6-0 win at 145 over varsity newcomer Jerimiah Zimmerman, making the score 30-9.
Ridge ran the table from there, getting a third-period pin from Kyle Winegardner at 152, a decision by Conner Buttry at 160, a pin by Bradie Bollman at 170, a technical fall by top-ranked Tyler Dibert at 182 and a major decision by Brad Winegardner at 195.
While he wasn't happy with his team getting pounded, Dutchcot liked that the Panthers got a taste of the power Ridge has.
"I'd like to build my schedule around good teams like Chestnut Ridge," Dutchcot said. "That's one reason why we picked up Philipsburg last year.
"I want these kids to see what it takes to go that next level and be the team like Chestnut Ridge, where you have a chance to go on and win a district title and go on to the state dual tournament."
