Roscoe D. Brownell Jr., 92, Altoona, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday at Altoona Regional after an extended illness.
He was born in Mangum, Okla., son of the late Roscoe Sr. and Mabel (Gourley) Brownell. He married Janet Good on March 30, 1944, at First Lutheran Church, Altoona, and she died July 19, 2008.
Surviving are two daughters: Sondra I. Thompson and Pamela S. Waddell (Randy), both of Altoona; a son, R. David and wife, Cindy, of Hollidaysburg; six grandchildren: Melissa Wilt (Ed), Matthew Brownell (Jennifer), Josh Thompson and Aaron, Adam and Ashley (Christopher) Waddell; and four great-grandchildren: Jacob and Nathan Wilt, Logan Brownell and Paisley Mollica.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon.
Roscoe graduated from high school in 1938 in Newfoundland, Pa., and received a B.S. in mathematics from Bucknell University in 1942 and an M.S. in mathematics in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-46 and attended Officer Candidate School in Fort Sill, Okla. He served in France during WWII and in Korea in 1951 as a reservist and retired from the Army Reserve as a major after 20 years of service. He taught school in Westfield and Williamsburg and was an insurance agent for Nationwide, retiring in 1982 after 35 years of service.
Roscoe was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he was a council member, reader, usher and Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He was a past member of the Iron Masters Country Club. He loved fishing, crossword puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, the Rev. Thomas Ekstrand officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church, Altoona.
