Aggressive Mounties run away from Dragons

MARTINSBURG - Like many in the area, Philipsburg-Osceola's Chris Thompson hadn't been feeling very well.

"He wasn't in school yesterday," P-O coach Tim McCamley said. "He said 'I've got to get this over with in a hurry.'"

Thompson, the top-ranked 106-pounder in the Mirror rankings with a 9-0 record, definitely did, pinning Kayron Joseph in 10 seconds and tying for the area lead in the quickest pin category.

It was also an example of the Mounties' aggressive, pinning approach to the dual meet. P-O, which hadn't wrestled in a dual meet since the Dec. 20 win over Central Mountain, charged out to a 49-0 lead, finished with seven pins and beat the Scarlet Dragons, 61-12.

"I thought we wrestled pretty well," said McCamley of his 2-2 team. "A couple guys wrestled hard, but we made a lot of mistakes. There were a lot of escapes with one second [left in a period]. I'm not happy with that, but it gives you something to work on."

"They're a physical team," Central first-year coach Mike Shippy said. "Being at Northern Bedford last year, we noticed how physical they were. But [assistant coach] Jan [Clark] and I talked, and we're getting to that level too. We've made a lot of strides lately. We're pretty tickled with our effort."

There were three bouts that ended with regular decisions. The Dragons (5-6) won two of them, but P-O's Justin Millard won the first, 5-3, over Trae Shirey in the opening bout at 145. Millard's two first-period takedowns were enough to get the win.

From there, Andrew Greenawalt followed with a pin of Mike Mock in 1:09 at 152, and Connor Mann built a 6-1 lead on Lane Kreider at 160 before cradling him for a fall in 2:19.

At 170, Jay Prentice took Blake Burket down with a second left to earn a 16-8 major decision.

After Dennis Lumadue won by forfeit at 182 to hike his record to 11-0, R.J. Kephart, in a 2-2 195-pound bout with Isaac Little, reversed Little to his back and pinned him in 2:33, making the score 33-0.

Nick Gray increased P-O's lead with a pin of Robbie Weitzel in 3:42 at 220. Mason Pryde, who weighed in at 199, built a 9-1 lead on Wes Heuston at 285 before getting a fall in 3:13.

"He's eliminating at 195, and it's real close between him and R.J.," McCamley said of Pryde. "They're both good wrestlers. They're going to push each other."

Thompson's lightning-quick pin made the score 49-0, but Kale Burket, ranked second at 113, got the Dragons on the scoreboard with a fall over Chris Barnhart in 1:02 to push his record to 11-0.

P-O's Bryan Descavish pinned Colin Ulery in 42 seconds at 120 before the anticipated 126-pound bout between Brian Evans and Central freshman Jordan Quarello.

Quarello showed his dominance on top, though, charging out to an 11-2 lead with six nearfall points. But, Evans reversed at the end of the second and reversed Quarello to his back in the third, but Quarello won, 11-8.

"He came out pretty strong," Shippy said, "but we've got to teach him a couple things to hold back, especially when you're winning by seven or eight points. But, we don't want him to get away from being aggressive."

"Evans came back strong," McCamley said. "He gave up way too many back points at the beginning of the match."

The 132-pound bout between P-O's Dallas Kephart and Central's Terry Albright - the final one with Caleb Shively winning by forfeit at 138 - went to the tiebreaker tied, 5-5.

In the first 30-second rideout, Albright escaped and headlocked Kephart to his back for five points. Kephart escaped in the second rideout, but Albright won, 11-6.

"That was a big win for Terry," Shippy said. "[The headlock] is one of his weapons. When the opportunity comes, we allow him to do it."
