TYRONE - Tyrone Area High School students enrolled in the Horticulture and Landscaping class successfully grew 125 poinsettias in the school's greenhouse without the use of pesticides or growth regulators.
Each student selected three cuttings, which were purchased from Rozick's Greenhouses, a local grower. The students had to provide the right amount of water and fertilizer and note any infestation of insects, amount of growth and any irregular changes.
Agriscience teacher Tiffany Hoy said with about four weeks to go the students started to notice whiteflies, and they then used liquid dish detergent as a control method.
Jacob Damon, a Tyrone FFA student, waters a poinsettia.
Each student was allowed to take home a poinsettia he or she grew with the rest sold to raise funds for the spring crops.
