James Russell "Jim" Wiser, 55, Tyrone, died Wednesday at Van Zandt VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Philipsburg, son of the late Charles James and Mary Lou (Supina) Wiser. He met his wife, Mary (Cox) Berryhill, while serving in the U.S. Navy, and they married Jan. 13, 1990, in Lakewood, Calif.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mitzi Lewis (Ted) of Altoona; two grandchildren: Alexandria Lewis of Altoona and Tyler Lumpkin of King George, Va.; a brother, John Sr. (Marie) of Tyrone; a sister, Janice Snyder (David) of New Cumberland; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Donald, Patrick and Timothy.
Jim was a 1975 graduate of Tyrone Area High School and attended Penn State Altoona. He retired in 1993 as a petty officer first class from the U.S. Navy and had received the Navy Achievement Medal (third award), Navy Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal (second award), Cold War Victory Commemorative Medal, Southeast Asia Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Battle Efficiency Ribbon or Navy "E" Ribbon (fifth award), Saudi Arabian Kuwait Liberation Medal and Navy Unit Commendation (third award).
Jim enjoyed fishing and was an avid Pittsburgh Penguins, football and NASCAR fan. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013. Interment will be at Burket Cemetery, Warriors Mark.
