Wilford C. Stephens, 96, Altoona, died early Tuesday morning at his residence.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Wilford A. and Eleanor A. (Templeton) Stephens. He married Ethel B. Mountain on May 18, 1943, in Montana.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel; a son, Jay Stephens and wife, Judy, of Boydton, Va.; a daughter, Cheryl Lesch and husband, Earl, of Brockway; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters: Hazel Stephens, Evelyn Stephens Crawford, Isabelle Stephens Waite and Alma Stephens.
Mr. Stephens was a 1934 graduate of Altoona High School and a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in vocational instruction. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II and attaining the rank of sergeant. He served in the European Theatre of Operations participating in the air offensive over Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He earned the American Theater Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Wilford retired as an instructor in the machine shop at Altoona Area Vo-Tech in 1978 after 18 years of service. He was previously employed as a machinist apprentice with the railroad with 24 years of service. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Altoona.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Paula Schmitt officiating.
Interment will be made at Greenwood Cemetery, Altoona.
