Heights to face NC in title game

December 28, 2012
By Rick Weaver - For The Mirror

PATTON - Cambrie Heights basketball coach Eric Nagel got something else after Christmas: A hardwood version of the Coal Bowl.

The Highlanders filled their half of Saturday afternoon's championship bill with a 62-27 rout of overmatched Moshannon Valley in the first round of the weather-delayed Cambria Heights Holiday Baskertball Tournament on Thursday night. Cambria Heights will face Northern Cambria, an easy 74-45 winner over Glendale, in the title game at approximately 2:45 p.m.

"We were hoping we'd get this," Nagel said, referring to the once annual football match-up that was recently revived between the neighboring schools. "This is kind of like, I guess, the Coal Bowl of basketball."

Inclement weather Wednesday pushed back the start of the boys' and girls' tournaments by one day. The girls open play this evening, with their third-place and championship games planned Saturday evening.

The way things turned out, the Highlanders (4-3) didn't have that much to weather. Their edge in height and quickness proved too much for the Black Knights.

"That's our weakness, our height," admitted Moshannon Valley coach Mike LaFuria. "They attacked it tonight in our zone."

"We're obviously a lot bigger across the board [to the point] where we can go high-low and get some looks inside," Negel said. "There were some definite mismatches there."

Heights limited Moshannon Valley to single-digit scoring in each quarter. Cambria Heights senior Nathan Bearer led all scorers with 18 points. Classmate Isaac Vescovi came off the bench to add 16 points.

"We worked on the 2-3 [zone defense but] we couldn't stop Bearer," LaFuria said. "We haven't been practicing because of the holidays. It's been tough to get everyone together.

"We're really young; we're trying to build chemistry together. I'm mixing in our older guys and younger guys. They don't trust each other. And it's not pretty."

The Colts (5-2) continued their strong start, led by Adam Olites' game-high 25 points. Fellow senior Josh Bonatesta added 17 points. Jeff Hogan grabbed 10 rebounds to go with eight points.

"They're very athletic," Nagel said. "They like to get up and down [the floor]. It's going to be a great match-up."

Sophomore Shea O'Donnell paced Glendale (2-3) with 14 points. The Vikings and Black Knights will meet in Saturday's third-place game at 1 p.m.
