Charles S. Dunkel, 63, Altoona, died Monday morning at his residence.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Alvin and Geraldine (Carl) Dunkel. He married Susan M. Hofmann on April 15, 1972, in Altoona.

Surviving are his wife, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage; two daughters: Erin M. and Sarah L. Dunkel, both of Altoona; a son, Kurt and wife, Kelly, of Shippensburg; three grandsons: Landen, Andreas and Kieran; and a sister, Eileen Detwiler and husband, Daniel, of Bakers Summit.

Charles was a 1966 graduate of Altoona High School. He attended Penn State Altoona Campus for two years.

He was a self-employed proprietor of Dunkel Refrigeration. He was also a machinist mate 2nd class in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict.

Charles was a member of the American Legion Hall and Moriarity Post 551, St. Michael, Pa.; and a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union 354.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, golfing, working in the outdoors and walking his dog. He also enjoyed his work, fixing things and helping others.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Altoona, by the Rev. Kathy Colebank. Military honors will be by Blair County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, Home Nursing Agency Hospice, Home Nursing (Healing Patch) or Disabled American Veterans.
