Scholastic basketball roundup

Lee makes history in loss for AAHS

December 23, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

MECHANICSBURG - The Altoona girls basketball team went to overtime with Cumberland Valley Saturday afternoon before falling in the end, 77-72, in high school action.

Altoona did have two bright spots in the defeat as Darby Lee broke a school record by scoring 40 points. The old mark was held by Tracy Cooper, who scored 35 back in 1977.

And though head coach Jill Helsel was not thrilled about the loss, she admitted she did find out something about her club, which lost three starters to fouls in the team's third loss in six games this season.

"It was a tough loss. I don't feel good about the loss, but if you have to take something positive, something to learn from, we learned that we can go 9, 10 or 11 deep instead of just eight," Helsel said.

Starters Kaycie Reffner, Kayla Grimme and McKenzie Hatch all fouled out and finished with a combined 11 points. Cumberland Valley (7-1) hit on 28 of 43 from the foul line while Altoona went 23 of 30. Lee was 12 of 13 from the line as part of her 40 points.

"We went deep into our bench, kids that didn't have varsity experience played and they were excellent," she said. "We had a two-point lead at halftime, put our starters back to start the second half, got in trouble again and had to put our bench back in and they kept us in it."

Jackie Falconer led Cumberland Valley with 26 points. The win improved Cumberland Valley to 7-1.
