Josephine A. Slates, 80, formerly of Newry, died Saturday evening at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, after an extended illness.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of Leo and Catherine (McFeely) Berg. She married William H. Slates on Feb. 26, 1954, in Cumberland, Md., and he died March 24, 2004.
Surviving are three daughters: LeeAnn Shuta and husband, Joseph M., of Hollidaysburg, Patricia Fleck and husband, Tom, of Glendale and Catherine Bowser and husband, Dennis, of Duncansville; six grandchildren: Joey, John, Lynda, Judy, who was raised in Josephine's home, Anthony and Nicholas; and nine great-grandchildren: Kimberly, Kourtney, Taylor, Emma, Sarah, Lydia, Vance, Jeiger and JJ.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Ellen Fawks, in 2001; and a brother, Leo, in 1984.
Josephine was a graduate of Mount Aloysius Academy and a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Newry. She loved her children, cooking and animals.
Friends will be received from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Newry, Monsignor Anthony Little officiating. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
