Altoona officials working Class AA football title game

For the third time since the inception of the PIAA state football playoffs, an Altoona-based officiating crew will be working a championship game.

The seven-man crew from the George Iuzzolino Chapter of PIAA football officials will work the Class AA state championship game between Aliquippa and Wyomissing Saturday afternoon at HersheyPark Stadium.

The crew includes referee Bill Wolf, back judge Todd Parker, umpire Jim Sommer, head linesman Joel Mock, line judge Bud Ratchford, side judge Brian Bert, and his brother, field judge Brad Bert.

Saturday will mark the third personal appearance for Wolf in a state championship game. He also officiated in the Class AAA title game back in 1996 and the Class A championship in 2004. Mock also worked in the 2004 game.

Nick Felus, a 1996 graduate of Penn Cambria, will be coaching in the Class AAAA championship game for Coatsville against North Allegheny. Felus is the squad's offensive coordinator.

Players of the week

The Bellwood-Antis football team picked its players of the week for its Class A semifinal loss to Dunmore.

Casey Gray was the offensive pick, Tyler Campbell was named the defensive player, Keith Shawley was the lineman and Ethan Hunter was the special teams player.

Altoona triumphs

The Altoona gymnastics team opened its season with a win against Bellefonte, 128.75-114.85, Thursday night.

Junior Hannah Mulhern came in first in the floor event (8.4), and was fourth all-around (31.15).

While Altoona did not come in first in other events, the team came in second in each category, which contributed to the Lady Lions' victory.

Tyrone boys, girls fall

TYRONE - The Tyrone boys' and girls' high school swimming teams were swept by Bellefonte.

Tyrone's Mikayla Harris won three events (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 free relay).

Central swept

The Central boys and girls swimming teams were swept by Somerset at Penn State Altoona.

The boys lost, 92-30, despite a double-winning performance by the Scarlet Dragons' Brock Dodson. Dodson won both the 200 IM and 100 breastroke.

Ivy Tomlinson (100 freestyle and 100 breastroke) won two events for the Central girls swimming team, which lost to Somerset 101-57.

Hollidaysburg dominates

Hollidaysburg's high school varsity ice hockey team crushed Carrick, 10-2, at Galactic Ice in PIHL action.

No further results were reported to the Mirror.

Golden Tigers' JV ties

Hollidaysburg tied with Greensburg-Salem, 4-4, in junior varsity ice hockey action at Galactic Ice.

Jonathan Bilek scored two of Hollidaysburg's goals, and teammates Ben Batzel and Andrew Vonada each contributed a goal shot.

Hollidaysburg is now 4-1-1.

Landon nets hat trick

EBENSBURG - Dan Landon recorded a hat trick in a Bishop Guilfoyle win against Johnstown, 5-2, at the North Central Recreation Center in junior varsity ice hockey action.

Teammates Dakota Brunner and William Landon each chipped in a goal for the Marauders. Goalie Trent Bogart was 30-of-32 in blocked shots.

BG improved to 3-1.
