Juniata wins tournament

HUNTINGDON - Senior Alex Raymond, a Hollidaysburg graduate, scored his 1,000th career point in Juniata men's basketball's 81-61 win over Farmingdale State Saturday afternoon in the championship of the Doc Greene Tournament.

Raymond finished with a game-high 22 points after hitting four 3-pointers and going 6-for-7 from the free throw line.

"I couldn't be happier for somebody," Juniata coach Greg Curley said of Raymond's accomplishment. "He wants nothing more than this team to win. He is a great kid and a great teammate. We tried to honor him with the ball and he said he didn't want to, he wanted to go and win the game so that speaks of him."

Raymond was named to the all-tournament team for his effort over the weekend while fellow Eagle Kevin Stapleton was named the tournament MVP.

Lady Eagles victorious

WAYNE - The Juniata women's basketball team improved to 6-1 Saturday afternoon after topping Eastern University, 76-59, on the road.

Junior Kate McDonald put up a team-high 19 points after spending just 21 minutes on the floor. Sophomore Alix Sellers, a Huntingdon graduate, was the only other Eagle in double-digits. She picked up a career-high 11 points.

Mount men capture thriller

ERIE - The Mount Aloysius men took over sole possession of first place in the Allegheny Mountain Athletic Conference with a 99-97 double-overtime win over Penn State-Behrend.

Mount Aloysius senior Demetrius Davis, an Altoona graduate, hit a 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds to go in regulation to send the game into the first overtime, and notch the score 80-80.

Jeff Stem led Mount Aloysius with a game-high 31 points, including 5-11 from three-point distance. Davis added 24 points, and Turner chipped in 10 points.

ERIE - The Mount Aloysius women got back on the winning track by defeating Penn State-Behrend, 66-62.

Becky Bard finished with 26 points and six steals. Bishop Carroll Lindsy Sammarco added 17 points, and Teddi Burkett pulled down 10 rebounds.

Ross' effort is not enough

HAMBURG, N.Y. - Jonathan Ross scored a career-high 29 points, but it was not enough to put Penn State Altoona men's basketball over the top against Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon, as the Hawks won, 72-61, in the Hafner Recreation Center.

Matt Gehret, an Altoona graduate, added 11 points for the Lions.

Hilbert holds off Lady Lions

HAMBURG, N.Y. - Trailing by as many as 23 points to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert College, Penn State Altoona women's basketball staged a furious comeback attempt in the second half to get within two points of tying the game. But Hilbert held off the Lady Lions' rally, winning 71-63.

Moira Corrigan posted a double-double for Penn State Altoona, scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Her 16 points represent a career-high mark, while the 14 rebounds ties her career-best.

Alidia Strouse added 12 points and five rebounds for the Lady Lions, and Allison Edwards, a Williamsburg graduate, scored 10 to go along with nine rebounds.
